| Brad Trumbull, D'Rays Keyboardist | ||||||||
| Brad Trumbull has been playing keyboards professionally for 35 years, and performed in rock bands throughout the '70s and '80s. Trumbull's latest gig is a departure from the traditional roles he's played during his musical career. In addition to his day gig as keyboard manager at Sam Ash Tampa Bay, six months out of the year he has the distinct pleasure of being the keyboardist for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays major league baseball team.
Since the team's startup in the majors, Trumbull has been their resident keyboardist, motivating the crowd and making sure the home games are that much more enjoyable. The Devil Rays play in a dome, so Trumbull does not have to be locked away in a booth to protect his music gear from the elements. Instead, his "music area" is literally out in the stands, enabling him to better interact with the crowd. Trumbull rouses the fans with the assistance of a Korg CX-3 Organ and a Pa80 Professional Arranger. "I use the CX-3 for all the traditional organ parts to get the crowd going," he explains. "The Pa80 is used for playing sequences when the gates open, and I'll play a melody over that on the CX-3. During the game, I use the Pa80 for effects - everything from handclaps and drum sounds to guitar riffs. I also perform quick songs utilizing the arranger, such as 'Happy Birthday' and 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame.'" As anyone in attendance would agree, the highlight of Trumbull's performance comes during the fourth inning, when he is featured on Rays Vision (the big screen) doing a number that showcases his talents on both instruments. Considering the interactive nature of his role at the Devil Rays games, Trumbull can truly appreciate the flexible and expressive characteristics of his Korg keyboards. Source: Korg.com |
