| Sentry at Coliseum "With sentries pacing their measured steps all over the place, the Coliseum on March 3, 1941, became a military reservation as the 160th Infantry, "Los Angeles' Own," was mustered into the regular Army. This photo shows a sentry inside in front of the peristyle. Military passes were necessary for admittance to the Coliseum." | "In the winter of 1957, Dodgers' veteran catcher Roy Campanella was readying to move to L.A. He had leased a home in Redondo Beach and promised Walter O'Malley that he would play several more seasons. However, Campanella was permanently paralyzed in a car accident in January of 1958 while driving from Harlem to his home on Long Island. On May 7, 1959, the largest crowd in Major League Baseball history--some 93,103--filled the Coliseum to honor Campanella, in a exhibition game against the New York Yankees. Campanell is flanked by managers Walter Alston and Casey Stengel, with supervisor Kenneth Hahn and shortstop Pee Wee Reese in the background." | "Yes, there was a football game at the Coliseum last night--the L.A. Express vs. the Denver Gold, to be exact. The announced crowd was 3,059, but there couldn't have been more than 1,000 people in attendance. The 3-12 Express was defeated by the Gold, 27-20, and now spring football in L.A. faces almost certain oblivion."
