Diamond in the rough

Workers ready the Coliseum field with freshly laid sod in anticipation of the Dodgers debut in L.A. on April 18th.  The Dodgers plan to play their home games in the Memorial Coliseum until a new stadium is built in Chavez Ravine.

Sentry at Coliseum

"With sentries pacing their measured steps all over the  place, the Coliseum on March 3, 1941, became a military  reservation as the 160th Infantry, "Los Angeles' Own," was  mustered into the regular Army. This photo shows a sentry inside  in front of the peristyle. Military passes were necessary for  admittance to the Coliseum."

"In the winter of 1957, Dodgers' veteran catcher Roy  Campanella was readying to move to L.A. He had leased a home in Redondo Beach and promised Walter O'Malley that he would  play several more seasons. However, Campanella was  permanently paralyzed in a car accident in January of 1958 while  driving from Harlem to his home on Long Island. On May 7, 1959,  the largest crowd in Major League Baseball history--some  93,103--filled the Coliseum to honor Campanella, in a exhibition  game against the New York Yankees. Campanell is flanked by  managers Walter Alston and Casey Stengel, with supervisor  Kenneth Hahn and shortstop Pee Wee Reese in the background."

"Yes, there was a football game at the Coliseum last  night--the L.A. Express vs. the Denver Gold, to be exact. The  announced crowd was 3,059, but there couldn't have been more  than 1,000 people in attendance. The 3-12 Express was defeated  by the Gold, 27-20, and now spring football in L.A. faces almost  certain oblivion."

Attendance records were smashed during the 1959 World Series between the Dodgers and White Sox.  Games 3, 4 and 5, played in the Los Angeles Coliseum, each drew better than 92,000 fans.
